The Photobiological Effects

  MICROLIGHT ML830 ® LASER

In a rapidly developing technological  workplace, the human body has a hard time  keeping pace with the demands of modern  machines and repetitive motions. The  cumulative daily effect of fast, forceful and  seemingly harmless movements of one's  shoulders, elbows, wrists and hands while  operating computers, cutting meat, assembling  automobiles, or handling packages, adversely  affects workers and industries worldwide.

As demands for productivity increase, so do physical demands on the individual. These demands lead to stressed muscles and tendons pushed far beyond their limits, resulting in disorders commonly known as Repetitive Stress Injury or "RSI." A very common RSI problem is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome , or "CTS." CTS has a major financial impact on industry worldwide, resulting in millions of lost dollars each year.

MicroLight Corporation of America , a leader in non-toxic laser therapy, is working toward an effective solution to RSI, employing the process of photobiostimulation. The ML 830 ® was designed by a team of doctors and leading medical engineers to harness the therapeuticapplication of advanced low-energy laser technology.

Virtually all light has some penetration properties. However, when applied to the human body, the outer skin layers absorb some light. Traditional thermal (hot) laser light can penetrate skin, but often destroys tissue. Because damaged cells benefit from light, researchers looked for a way to develop a non-thermal and non-destructive method for delivering light to deep tissue.

The ML 830 ® is a non-thermal laser capable of penetrating deep into tissue. Once delivered, light energy promotes the process of photobiostimulation. The positive effect of photobiostimulation on animal cells is analogous to photosynthesis in plant cells, where a chain of chemical reactions is set in motion. In human tissue, the resulting photochemical reaction produces an increase in the cellular metabolism rate, which expedites cell repair and stimulation of the immune, lymphatic and vascular systems. The net result, observed in clinical trials to date, is an apparent reduction in pain, inflammation, edema and an overall reduction in healing time.
In cooperation with General Motors and several other clinical investigators throughout the United States, it was proved that the ML 830 ® is effective in the low-level laser therapeutic treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Future clinical trials will determine the efficacy of ML 830 ® low-energy laser therapy in other repetitive-stress disorders, pain management, soft tissue trauma, and dental applications.

Erchonia's Laser

How does it work?

There have been numerous scientific studies and are many research articles that discuss different aspects of LLLT, each with their own unique perspective, however the simple answer is through photonic absorption, laser light energy converts into chemical energy which initiates a cascade of events at a cellular level

  • LLLT promotes healing in many conditions because it penetrates the skin, increases the ATP and activates enzymes in the targeted cells.
  • Growth factor response within the cells and tissue as a result of increased ATP and protein synthesis.
  • Improved cell proliferation
  • Pain relief as a result of increased endorphin release.
  • Strengthening the immune system response via increasing levels of lymphocyte activity.

Biomodulation

When studying the biological effects of laser on cells and tissue, the word biomodulation is often used. It refers to the stimulation of cells and tissue to bring them to their most natural state. The goal in biomodulation is to stimulate without exceeding the cell or tissue ability to function properly.

For example: Our goal is to stimulate the cells to function in the target range. When tissue is damaged and functioning below the target range, we believe we can use the Erchonia laser to biomodulate the cells to that wavelength. The same is true for cells that are functioning over the target range.

Coherent Light and the Body

Coherent energy is critical when treating the body. Energy Medicine, The Scientific Basis gives several examples as to the importance of coherence. The following are excerpts from this book:

Click image to enlarge. In the late 1960s, Herbert Frohlich, a Doctor of Physics, specializing in Biological Coherence predicted, on the basis of quantum physics, that the living matrix must produce coherent or laser-like oscillations. Dr. Frohlich's prediction was confirmed in a number of laboratories. Of course, energy therapists of many schools have always recognized the importance of vibratory phenomena ( including light ) in healing, but academic molecular science was focused on other matters.

Dr. Frohlich's research goes on to report that coherent vibrations recognize no boundaries, at the surface of a molecule cell, or organism - they are collective or cooperative properties of the entire being. As such they are likely to serve as signals that integrate processes such as growth, injury repair, defense and the functioning of the organism as a whole. Each molecule, cell, tissue and organ has an ideal resonance

frequency that coordinates its activities. By manipulating and balancing the vibratory circuits, complementary therapists are able to directly influence the body's systemic defense and repair mechanisms.

We have repeatedly referenced Frohlich's hypothesis and the subsequent independent validation of findings that support, his prediction that crystalline molecular arrays should vibrate strongly and coherently. For an entertaining account of coherence its biological significance, read The Rainbow and the Worm ( Ho 1993 ).

Click image to enlarge.Research on electrically polarized molecule arrays reveals that interactions repeated by the millions of molecules within a cell membrane, tendon, muscle, bone, nerve cell or other structure, give rise to huge coherent or laser like vibrations. James Oschman, author of Energy Medicine states "Crystalline components of the living matrix act as coherent molecular antennas, radiating and receiving signals.

Research on coherence in biological systems is attracting much attention around the world. One important conclusion is that the water in the spaces between parts of the highly ordered systems is also highly organized. Vibrations of the water molecules can couple to the coherent energy patterns within the protein array. The resulting coherent water system has laser -like properties, and is likely to retain and release electromagnetic information, i.e. have a form of memory ( Del Guide et al 1988, Preparata 1995 ).

Frohlich ( 1978 ) An assembly of cells, as in a tissue or organ, will have certain collective frequencies that regulate important processes, such as cell division. Normally these control frequencies will be very stable. If, for some reason, a cell shifts its frequency, entraining signals from neighboring cells will tend to install the correct frequency. However, if a sufficient number of cells get out of step, the strength of the system's collective vibrations can decrease to the point where stability is lost. Loss of coherence can lead to disease or disorder.

While pathology may manifest as chemical imbalances, the underlying problem is electromagnetic. Hence providing the correct or healthy frequency, and entraining the oscillations back to coherence can often restore balance. These are profoundly significant concepts for all therapeutic approaches to the body. The whole field of chemical analysis by spectroscopy shows that there is a fundamental duality between chemical structure and coherent oscillations. Coherent vibrations in living systems are as fundamental as chemical bonds ( Smith 1994 )

FAQ ( Frequently Asked Questions )
  What is a TRUE Laser?
  • The Erchonia Laser is a TRUE LASER, fully compliant to the definitions set forth by those great men of science such as Bose and Einstein who predicted LASER in 1924 and the contemporary physicists Schawlow and Townes who brought LASER into the modern age. LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification by stimulated Emission of Radiation. Light created in this way, is then culminated and directed into an intense beam of coherent light through the use of cathode and anode reflecting components in order to produce a single stable frequency. According to Webster's Dictionary, Lasers are coherent or marked by logical consistency. The Erchonia laser meets all the scientifically defined attributes of a laser and is therefore classified as a TRUE laser. We assure and maintain this classification, through our unique and patented process, which produces the emission of coherent light, generated at a precise and stable frequency, and in a focused direction.

What is low-level laser?

  • Unlike high power lasers that use heat and destroy tissue, low energy lasers affect the cellular energy of the underlying tissue. Hot lasers have a thermal effect and have an output of 1MW or above.Cold ( or ) Low Level Lasers do not have a thermal effect on tissue, lasers that stimulate biological function have an output below 10mw- milliwatts ( ten- one thousands of a watt ).

Are there any side effects?

  • Low Level Lasers are safe, non-toxic and non invasive, there has not been a recorded side effect in over 1700 publications. There are nessecary precautions that need to be considered, such as avoiding pointing the laser beam directly into the eye and maintating it there, this could prove to be damaging to the eye.

What is the difference between a laser and an LED ( light emitting diode )?

  • There are many light emitting products on the market today, claiming to be lasers that do not meet all scientifically defined attributes. For example, products that use Light Emitting Diodes or LEDs as they are more commonly known, do if fact produce light, however the light is not intense, producing very little energy and are non-coherent, similar to light produced by common household light bulbs. Non-coherent or non-culminated light is the result of photons moving in random directions at random times, generating random frequencies. The most common use of LEDs is in electronic equipment, such as cell phones and VCRs, to inform the users that the item is ON. LEDs are cheap and easy to reproduce ( Pontinen 1992 ). Obviously, these devices are NOT lasers. This misconception is in large part a by-product of marketing. Some sales professional use the word "laser" in order to describe a process such as in "laser pointers" which refers more to mankind's collective imagination than scientific comprehension.
